Start with the appointments. Most Napa wineries and many in Sonoma host visitors by reservation, and groups often need a private tasting booked weeks ahead. Ask each winery whether it accepts groups arriving by bus or van, because some estates limit vehicle size or group numbers.
Pick the vehicle for the tightest stop. Sprinter vans for up to 14 fit almost any estate, minibuses for 25 to 35 fit most, and full-size coaches work only at wineries with room for them. Mixed groups sometimes split into two vans rather than one coach.
Plan the route by valley. In Napa, Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail run north to south, and cross roads such as Oakville Cross Road link them. In Sonoma, the Sonoma Valley, the Russian River Valley and Dry Creek and Alexander valleys near Healdsburg are best as separate days.
