A Sprinter is the right vehicle when the group is 14 people or fewer. It fits hotel porte-cocheres, winery driveways and tight San Francisco curbs that a full coach cannot use, and it feels like a private car rather than a bus. Most Bay Area Sprinters seat 10 to 14 in leather captain's chairs or forward-facing benches, with room for carry-on bags but not a full set of airport suitcases for 14 people.
The hourly rate is only part of the price. Every operator sets a minimum, usually four hours, and the clock normally runs from the time the van leaves its yard to the time it gets back. A 45 minute SFO transfer can still bill four hours, and a San Jose pickup for a van based on the Peninsula adds deadhead time. That is why two quotes for the same trip can look very different.
Bridge tolls, parking and airport access fees are either built into the price or added as extras, depending on the operator. On a Bay Area trip that crosses the Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge or the San Mateo Bridge, tolls add up. Umbrella Charter Network shows one all-in number with driver, fuel and standard tolls included, and lists gratuity separately so nothing appears later.
Late nights, holidays and big event weekends raise prices. Dreamforce week, Outside Lands, graduation season in May and June, and New Year's Eve fill the Bay Area's Sprinter supply first, and the same van that costs $140 an hour on a Tuesday in February can cost $190 an hour on a Saturday in June. Booking four to six weeks ahead for those dates keeps the choice wide.
If the group is larger than 14, compare a minibus before booking two vans. Two Sprinters mean two drivers and two minimums, and a 25 to 35 seat minibus with one driver is often cheaper and keeps the group together.
