A charter bus from the Bay Area to Lake Tahoe takes about three and a half to four and a half hours on I-80 or US-50, longer on a Friday or in snow. From fall to spring the coach must carry chains and follow Caltrans chain controls, so book an operator that runs mountain routes every winter.

Bay Area groups head to Tahoe for ski trips, company retreats, weddings at the lake and summer camps. A coach or minibus carries the group and the gear together, and nobody has to drive Donner Summit in a storm.
There are two main routes. I-80 over Donner Summit serves Truckee, Northstar, Palisades Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe. US-50 over Echo Summit serves South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly. From San Francisco, both take about three and a half to four and a half hours in clear weather, and Friday afternoon traffic can add two hours.
Winter changes the plan. Caltrans sets chain controls on both passes during storms, and commercial buses must carry chains whenever controls are in place. In the heaviest storms the passes close for hours. A good operator watches the forecast, may move the departure earlier, and has a plan for a closed pass. Build some slack into a ski-trip schedule.
Big coaches handle the highways, but some Tahoe lodges, cabins and resort drop-offs sit on narrow or steep roads. A minibus or a van may be better for the last mile, especially in snow. Share the lodging address before booking so the vehicle fits the driveway.
