From San Francisco, US-101 south through San Jose and then CA-156 and CA-1 is the quickest route, about two to two and a half hours. CA-1 along the coast through Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz is slower but more scenic. From San Jose or Silicon Valley, count on about an hour and a half.
Monterey and Carmel have tight streets. Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea has narrow lanes and limited bus parking, and 17-Mile Drive has its own rules and fees for commercial vehicles. Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium have group drop-off areas. A minibus often works better than a full coach for Carmel and Pebble Beach stops, and a good operator will say so.
Big weekends fill up early. Monterey Car Week in August, the Pebble Beach golf tournament in February and races at Laguna Seca bring heavy traffic and very few free vehicles. Book early and expect slower driving on CA-1 and CA-68.
